Operation Porcupine: Ukraine Develops New Tactics for the Never-Ending War

Der Spiegel International

Russian President Vladimir Putin appears uninterested in peace in Ukraine, and there is no end to the war in sight. Kyiv has increasingly reached the conclusion that the country must do all it can to guarantee its own security. The Russians have yet again shifted their tactics, says Sokil. Several months ago, they would send small units into battle, but now, it is often just single soldiers operating on their own. And they are no longer looking to fight, preferring instead to just sneak forward and wait for air support, says the Ukrainian major. Their FPV drones are everywhere," he says, using the common shorthand for first-person view." On a mild, late summer night, Sokil is resting at a farm on the western edge of the Donbas, taking a drag from his cigarette.

HLSMAC: A New StarCraft Multi-Agent Challenge for High-Level Strategic Decision-Making

Hong, Xingxing, Wang, Yungong, Jin, Dexin, Yuan, Ye, Huang, Ximing, Wu, Zijian, Li, Wenxin

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Benchmarks are crucial for assessing multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithms. While StarCraft II-related environments have driven significant advances in MARL, existing benchmarks like SMAC focus primarily on mi-cromanagement, limiting comprehensive evaluation of high-level strategic intelligence. To address this, we introduce HLSMAC, a new cooperative MARL benchmark with 12 carefully designed StarCraft II scenarios based on classical stratagems from the Thirty-Six Stratagems. Each scenario corresponds to a specific stratagem and is designed to challenge agents with diverse strategic elements, including tactical maneuvering, timing coordination, and deception, thereby opening up avenues for evaluating high-level strategic decision-making capabilities. We also propose novel metrics across multiple dimensions beyond conventional win rate, such as ability utilization and advancement efficiency, to assess agents' overall performance within the HLSMAC environment. We integrate state-of-the-art MARL algorithms and LLM-based agents with our benchmark and conduct comprehensive experiments. The results demonstrate that HLSMAC serves as a robust testbed for advancing multi-agent strategic decision-making.

Apple just pushed a key smart home feature into 2025

PCWorld

Looking forward to using Siri and HomeKit to control your robot vacuum? Your wait just got a little longer. An edit to a teeny-tiny footnote at the bottom of the Apple Home product page indicates that robot vacuum support for HomeKit has been pushed back into "early 2025," as noted by Macrumors. During its annual developer's conference in June, Apple promised that HomeKit, Siri, and the Apple Home app would gain the ability to work with robot vacuums this year, and many expected the feature to debut with the expected iOS 18.2 release later in December. It's not clear why Apple chose to put off the vacuum functionality, but assuming there are no more delays, smart home users won't have to wait too much longer for the update.

As California fires worsen, can AI come to the rescue?

Los Angeles Times

Just before 3 a.m. one night this month, Scott Slumpff was awakened by the ding of a text message. "An ALERTCalifornia anomaly has been confirmed in your area of interest," the message said. Slumpff, a battalion chief with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, sprang into action. The message meant the agency's new artificial intelligence system had identified signs of a wildfire with a remote mountaintop camera in San Diego County. Within minutes, crews were dispatched to the burgeoning blaze on Mount Laguna -- squelching it before it grew any larger than a 10-foot-by-10-foot spot.

ChatLogo: A Large Language Model-Driven Hybrid Natural-Programming Language Interface for Agent-based Modeling and Programming

Chen, John, Wilensky, Uri

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Building on Papert (1980)'s idea of children talking to computers, we propose ChatLogo, a hybrid natural-programming language interface for agent-based modeling and programming. We build upon previous efforts to scaffold ABM & P learning and recent development in leveraging large language models (LLMs) to support the learning of computational programming. ChatLogo aims to support conversations with computers in a mix of natural and programming languages, provide a more user-friendly interface for novice learners, and keep the technical system from over-reliance on any single LLM. We introduced the main elements of our design: an intelligent command center, and a conversational interface to support creative expression. We discussed the presentation format and future work. Responding to the challenges of supporting open-ended constructionist learning of ABM & P and leveraging LLMs for educational purposes, we contribute to the field by proposing the first constructionist LLM-driven interface to support computational and complex systems thinking.

Securiti creates a command center for AI-driven cloud data protection

#artificialintelligence

Join us on November 9 to learn how to successfully innovate and achieve efficiency by upskilling and scaling citizen developers at the Low-Code/No-Code Summit. Data protection isn't something organizations can take lightly. With high-profile companies like Sephora, Meta, and Google [subscription required] getting hit with millions in data protection fines over the past couple of months, it's clear that regulators can and will penalize noncompliance. However, many organizations are still failing to keep up with their compliance obligations due to the complexity of identifying data due where it lives in the environment. The good news is that is a challenge that many providers are looking to address with artificial intelligence (AI).

Singapore has deployed robots to patrol public areas

Engadget

Singapore is known for having stringent laws and for having surveillance cameras all over the city-state. In the future, it may also deploy robots to keep an eye out for rule breakers -- in fact, Singapore has started testing a robot named Xavier, putting a couple of them to work by having them patrol and survey a public area with high foot traffic. Over the next three weeks, the robots will monitor the crowds of Toa Payoh Central to look for what the nation's authorities describe as "undesirable social behaviors." Those bad behaviors include the "congregation of more than five people," which goes against its COVID-19 safety measures. In addition, the Xavier robots will look for instances of smoking in prohibited areas and illegal hawking.

3 Themes Surface in the 2021 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies

Earlier this year, Christie's announced two major firsts for an auction house: It would accept cryptocurrency, and it would offer for sale a purely digital work backed by a unique nonfungible token (NFT). The work, by digital artist Beeple, sold for more than $69 million. It forms part of an entirely new means of monetization -- and potentially a whole new digital ecosystem. An NFT is a unique blockchain-based digital asset that links to real-world assets like digital art or music and tokenized physical assets like houses or cars. NFTs use immutable public blockchains and, as of last month, had a market valuation greater than $300 million.

7 supply chain management best practices in a COVID-19 world

#artificialintelligence

The current COVID-19 crisis brings new meaning to the term disruption. Organizations and their supply chain managers need new supply chain management best practices -- and fast. Coronavirus panic buying, national lockdowns, sudden changes in buying priorities and shipping challenges are each having a different impact on supply chains. Companies are going to have to face the new reality, which is that we cannot make supply chain decisions based purely on economics, said Tom Derry, CEO of the Institute for Supply Management. Enterprises need to factor in a variety of disruptions, including geopolitical events, weather and health problems.
